When people think of purchasing an iguana, numerous questions come to mind. Generally, one of these questions is: Where can I keep it? Most people then attempt to find out the various elements of a quality cage for an iguana. If you are searching to find the best iguana cage then here is a bit of guidance for you:

1) The size of iguanas is the first thing you need to know about so that you know just how roomy your iguana cage needs to be. A lot of individuals have the idea that the cage will limit the size that the reptile can grow. This is not true. Given good conditions an iguana will grow up to 6 feet! That means that you will be required to get an enormous cage for your iguana. In fact, many people provide their iguanas with an entire room instead of a cage!

Of course, if you are not quite set to provide that much room for your pet, you could choose to delay until your pet gets to its full size. But, the iguana cage that you provide has to be big enough to contain the regular activities of your iguana. It shouldn't limit the iguana in any way. If you opt to wait until your iguana has reached full size, you should at the bare minimum prepare and make plans for the future when you are going to require a larger iguana enclosure.

2) Temperature - Iguanas are cold blooded. This means that they have to regulate their body temperatures by making use of the surroundings. What are the implications of this? It means that you need to provide a variety of temperatures in the iguana cage. This is so the iguana can travel from the various spots to correctly adjust its body temperature. You should also try to incorporate a source of heat without light which should be on at night time.

3) Humidity - Iguanas expect high levels of humidity to live happily. They become easily dehydrated because iguanas aren't really inclined to drink much water. This is due to the fact that the natural habitats of iguanas get high levels of humidity and this keeps them from becoming dehydrated. Dehydration can lead to kidney problems. This means that low humidity levels will affect the life of your iguana. Another motive to keep the iguana habitat humid is because humidity helps loosen dry skin. The iguana will shed easier if it is kept in a humid habitat. If you really want to get your iguana healthy, you must have an iguana cage that has a humidity of 65 to 75 percent.

4) Lighting - Iguanas need a good source of UVA and UVB light. Without question, the best source that you can make use of is the sun. This doesn't mean you should position your iguana cage in a sunlit area. The glass or material of iguana cages filter out the UV light that is needed by iguanas to produce vitamin D3. This vitamin helps calcium consumption. That means you need to let your iguana to bask in direct sunlight as much as you can. This is important in development of strong bones and avoiding Metabolic Bone Disease which is a very common cause of death in iguanas in captivity.

Other than the sun, a cage for iguana must also contain an artificial source of UVA and UVB light. This should make up for days when the sunlight is not enough for your iguana.
